new hobby?

Friday, May 22, 2009
In the past year, I've developed a number of hobbies / collections that I still am absolutely hooked on:
  • photography
  • baking
  • scrapbooking / card making
  • vinyl toys (this is slightly diminishing with every paycheck that needs to go to other purposes & hobbies lol)
But now I'm truly considering adding something new to the mix..
Sewing.

Why?
  • Because I would like to own clothes and purses and other cute items that no one else can find.
  • Because I'm cheap.
  • Because I've pondered the idea of uploading my own products on etsy :)
  • Because when we finally start having kids, I want to be able to make them clothes ;) [which, I'm sure, as they get older, they will hide under the bed]
With that said, I kind of need to start LEARNING how to sew.. and how to follow patterns.. and how to get creative.. yes, yes, baby steps.. baby steps..

I'll probably check out JoAnn Fabrics and other hobby stores (of which I am definitely a regular).. or maybe even see if they offer anything at the community colleges around my area..

hmmm... hopefully it's not that hard :o)

Work Rants

Thursday, May 07, 2009
So, I'm all for saving money and can definitely say I struggle with it often.. but there are some patients that come to our store that drive me INSANE with their ridiculous financial solutions..

For example.. we have one patient who is on public aid (ILMED).. generally, all generics are sold at no charge, and preferred brand names (those that do NOT have a generic available and are considered common medications) are $3. Well, today, her son (about 20-21 yrs old) comes to pick up the medications and I tell him his total for THREE prescriptions is $3. The response I receive: "WHAT?! What do you MEAN it costs money. three DOLLARS!? She don't give me no money. Shoooot" and then he walks away. He EXPECTED three medications to be free..

wtf.

The patient after him paid $40 for one medication, which he receives on a monthly basis. And he always has a smile on HIS face when we see him.

Don't get me wrong, I know some people really do struggle with money and saving $3 here and there is a huge deal.. but I also know that that's not the case with many of our customers.

Oh, and that guy came back in an hour. Handed me his $3... in quarters, and said something smart like "here ya go. yo bus money"...

There are definitely some new demographics coming into the pharmacy nowadays.. and I'm not sure I'm enjoying the change. =/

Courage

COURAGE is not the absence of fear but rather the judgment that something is more important than fear. The brave may not live forever but the cautious do not live at all.

random rant

Friday, May 01, 2009
The other day, I had one of our regular elderly customer come in.. He's about 80 years old, and he's the sweetest man ever. He lives alone (widower) and is pretty independent.. Well, when he came in, he was obviously very much in pain and a little upset.. I asked him if he was okay, and he replied:

"You'll never believe it. Over the weekend, I was rear-ended at a stoplight. A 15year old girl with a permit didn't brake in time. Now I'm driving this new rental car and there are so many buttons I barely know how to drive it!"

He left, walking timidly, relying on the cart he was pushing for stability. As he left, I couldn't help but feel super upset.. I felt so bad for what he had to go through, especially since he takes care of himself and doesn't seem to have anyone else to help him. At the same time, I hope that girl knows how much trouble she's in. She was driving ALONE with a permit. Yeah.. I hate high schoolers.. I know it's a pretty ignorant thing to say.. I know it's a stereotype to think all high schoolers are immature.. I know there are exceptions..

But this wasn't an exception. And it's just another reason why I hate when high schoolers think they own the world and can do what they want. Poor Mr. (ins pt's last name for privacy). I hope he's feeling better. :(
